3rd International  Conference on  “Genetic and Molecular Diagnosis in Modern Medicine and Biology” organized by Yenepoya University commenced on 27th February 2010 and ended on 1st March 2010.There has been a positive response from speakers, delegates and participants from India and abroad. 395 delegates registered from 12 states of India.


The programme began with the inaugural session. The chief guest was Dr. J.V.Yakhmi, Advisor to Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission on Basic Sciences, Mumbai and Guest of Honour was Dr. Shahid Jameel, Group Leader, Virology, International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, New Delhi.  Dr. Shahid delivered a key note address on “ What makes us human?”


It was a three days’ conference with eight scientific sessions which included oral  presentations and a panel discussion. Further,  poster presentations were also held over  three days.


Eight sessions had various relevant  themes like Genetics in India, Clinical Genetics, Cancer Genetics, Cytogenetics, Genetic Counseling and Molecular Diagnostics and Recent Advances.  Thirty invited guest speakers  of international and national repute delivered lectures and discussed interesting cases too . Each session had a chairperson and a moderator. There was a very good interaction between delegates and the scientists.

Panel discussion was all the more interesting. It was on developing clinical genetics, diagnostic facilities and genetic counseling in India. There were seven panelists in the session and various issues like karyotyping, genetic counseling were debated  in depth with much clarity.


Free paper presentation had a total of 24 oral presentations. Nine scientists presented their papers to contest for the YMK Young Scientist Award and nine post graduate students contested for the YMK student award. In addition there were six oral presentations belonged to non- competing category.The poster competition drew an unprecedented enthusiastic response. 119 abstracts were received, 7 from under graduates, 46 from post graduates and remaining from young scientists.


The program ended with the valedictory program. Prof. A. J. Rao, Rajaramanna Fellow, Professor of Biochemistry, DST, IISc, Bangalore was the Chief Guest and delivered the Valedictory address on "Secretory  Leucocyte Protease Inhibitor and its role in Cancer".
